It's good to be back in my home away from home, Room 215! I am in awe of how our Fourth Brainers have grown since November. Besides increased heights, new hairstyles, and bigger feet, your children have developed new scholarly habits and are showing off their new understanding of the American Revolution. I would like to thank you all for supporting Ms. Rosenberg and Mrs. Scott while I was away. They have done an incredible job and I am truly grateful! Paul is doing great and is home with Grandma (my mom) while I am at Trinity. Thank you for all of your prayers, kindness, and understanding these past several months. I promise our classroom blog won't become a baby album, but just for fun, here is a picture of the little guy.
Since returning from Spring Break our students have been sharing the information they have been researching about the American Revolution in our unit, Reading History. In groups they have worked together to learn about key events leading up to the Revolutionary War by reading a variety of nonfiction texts, including primary sources. This week they are presenting what they've learned in skits.
I am thrilled to return just in time to teach one of my favorite math units, Fraction Cards and Decimal Grids. We started this unit today by making connections between the 3rd grade fraction unit and reviewing key vocabulary like equivalent, numerator and denominator. The unit began with us modeling parts of a whole with Cuisenaire rods (check out virtual Cuisenaire rods here) and using sentence strips to represent halves, fourths, and eighths on a number line. We will continue to find fractional parts of the areas of rectangles and identify equivalent fractions. During this unit we will eventually investigate decimals as a method of understanding portions of equal groups.
How can you help your child with the work for this unit? Beyond asking your child about the work we are doing with fractions in class, involve them in real world fraction/decimal conversations (following recipes, dealing with money, reading your car odometer or gas gage, etc.)

Of course, we've also been busy preparing for the Wax Museum. The Fourth Brainers are very excited to welcome you into our classroom this Friday for the Wax Museum. You are invited to stop by anytime between 9:15 and 10:30am. If you would like to pick up your child's sibling and bring them along with you, you are welcome to do so. Please let your other child's teachers know prior to Friday that you are going to pull them from class.
While you explore the museum we ask that you encourage siblings (even older ones) to behave as if they are in an actual museum, using quiet voices, showing respect for the space and displays, and focusing on the information being presented. It will help our young biographers do their best presenting if our guests remember their best museum manners.
